A religious credentialing and ordination pathway for qualified Sikhs called to serve the Guru, the Sikh Panth, and the wider community.

Inland Sikh Education Empire (ISEE), operating Sikh Center Riverside, reviews and credentials Granthis/Sikh Ministers under its own religious authority. An ISEE credential is separate from employment, institutional endorsement, immigration sponsorship, and appointment to a particular position.

Roles available

Granthi/Sikh Minister

A Granthi is entrusted with the respectful care, reading, and service of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and may lead or support Sikh congregational worship, Hukamnama, Ardas, Path, Kirtan, Katha, and life-cycle ceremonies according to training and the scope of the credential. He or she also provides religious leadership, pastoral and spiritual care, education, ceremonies, community service, and—when separately qualified and endorsed—ministry in settings such as hospitals, the military, correctional institutions, campuses, and public agencies.

Applicants may seek a Granthi/Sikh Minister credential.

Basic qualifications

ISEE considers the whole applicant, including religious formation, competence, character, service, and readiness. A candidate ordinarily should:

  • Identify and live as a Sikh.
  • Amrit Sanskar – initiation ceremony into the Khalsa.
  • Honor the authority of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the Sikh Panth.
  • As initiated Sikh, keeping the discipline of the Five Ks (the Panj Kakaar).
  • Demonstrate familiarity with Sikh beliefs, history, Rehat, and seva.
  • Show competence appropriate to the requested role.
  • Demonstrate integrity, emotional maturity, sound judgment, and appropriate boundaries.
  • Be willing to follow ISEE’s ethics, safeguarding, privacy, and renewal requirements.
  • Provide three qualified references.
  • Complete interviews, verification, and practical assessment as required.

Gurmukhi proficiency, specific training, or supervised experience may be required for particular duties or credential levels. The Credentialing Committee evaluates these requirements in relation to the role requested.

Credentialing process

1. Submit the application: Complete the online application and provide the required supporting documents.
2. References and verification:Three confidential recommendations are submitted directly to ISEE. ISEE may verify education, service, credentials, and other relevant information.
3. Interview and practical assessment: The candidate meets with the Credentialing Committee. Granthi candidates may be asked to demonstrate Gurmukhi reading, pronunciation, Guru Granth Sahib seva, Ardas, Hukamnama, Kirtan, Katha, or ceremony-related skills. Minister candidates may be assessed in pastoral care, ethics, teaching, leadership, and institutional ministry.
4. Formation or conditions, when needed: The committee may require coursework, mentoring, supervised seva, safeguarding education, or further practical development.
5. Sikhism Course: Sikhism 101 This introductory self-study course explores the foundations of the Sikh faith, including its core beliefs, the lives and teachings of the Sikh Gurus, the authority of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, and the meaning of Sikh identity. It is designed for individuals seeking a clear understanding of what it means to be a Sikh. Sikhism 201 This intermediate self-study course builds upon Sikhism 101 through a deeper study of Sikh spiritual practice, Rehat, history, ethics, seva, congregational life, and the responsibilities associated with living according to Sikh principles.
6. Decision and credential: The designated religious authority issues a written decision. Approval may be full, limited in scope, conditional, deferred, or denied.
7. Ordination or commissioning: An approved first-time candidate participates in the ISEE religious ceremony or service established for the credential and receives written evidence of status.
8. Good standing and renewal: Credentialed clergy must remain accountable to ISEE requirements, report material changes, and complete renewal or continuing formation as established by policy.

Ethics, safety, and privacy

Applicants must agree to serve without exploitation or discrimination; maintain appropriate pastoral boundaries and confidentiality; protect children and vulnerable persons; disclose relevant disciplinary or safeguarding concerns; and represent their credential accurately. ISEE may conduct lawful verification or background screening. Sensitive information should be transmitted only through instructions provided by ISEE.
